PRO-ABORTION ZEALOT TO SPEAK AT CATHOLIC HEALTH CONFERENCE
Stephen Lewis has long record of outspoken opposition to Catholic moral principles
OTTAWA, Nov 23 (LSN.ca) - The Catholic Health Association of Canada (CHAC) has once again chosen an unsuitable keynote speaker for its annual convention. Last year the CHAC was criticized by a bishop over the choice of abortion proponent David Suzuki as keynote speaker at their April 2000 convention. This year they have selected Stephen Lewis, a former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations and Former Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, for their April 28- May 1, 2001 convention at the Hotel Newfoundland in St. John's Newfoundland.
Prior to the passage of the Omnibus Bill in 1969, which legalized abortion in Canada, Lewis was an outspoken abortion rights promoter. As Ontario leader of the socialist New Democratic Party he influenced the party to a hard line position on abortion, stifling all pro-life protest. Moreover, while Lewis was executive director of UNICEF when the Vatican pulled its funding from the UN Children's Fund for its deliberate association with projects and other organizations that promoted abortion and contraception. Moreover, this July Lewis was at the United Nations asking for the Catholic Church in Rwanda to apologize for supposed complicity in the Rwandan massacre. As a prominent advocate of NDP Party policies Lewis would also be in active disagreement with Catholicism on other moral issues. Lewis' wife is Toronto Star columnist Michele Landsberg, an extremely outspoken critic of orthodox Christianity and a vitriolic abortion supporter.
Last year Bishop Roussin of Victoria, where the convention was held, commented on the Suzuki selection saying that had he been on the selection committee for the speaker he would have raised objections over the choice of the controversial figure. Reacting to the controversies surrounding Suzuki, Bishop Roussin said "obviously I deplore some of his stands." Suzuki, is one of the best known promoters of population control. His TV show Nature of Things has lauded the use of brain tissue from aborted babies as a treatment for Parkinson's disease. And less than six months before speaking at the convention Suzuki appeared nude on the cover of a TV guide magazine to promote an upcoming show on the "penis."
The CHAC may be contacted to respectfully request that they rescind the invitation to Lewis who is a totally inappropriate speaker for a Catholic health association conference. Contact them at:

PRO-ABORTION POLITICIANS TO BE EXCOMMUNICATED IN MOLDOVA
CHISINAU, Moldova, Nov 23 (LSN.ca) - The Moldovan Orthodox Church announced Tuesday that it will excommunicate any member of parliament who votes to legalize abortion. Catholic World News reported yesterday that the former Soviet republic's parliament voted earlier this month in favor of a first draft of a law on abortion and birth control, and a second favorable vote would advance the proposal toward legalization.
In an open letter to parliament, Moldovan Metropolitan Vladimir said, "We will demand from the clergy not to give communion to those supporting abortions until they have changed their attitude to this crime. . . Would you or your children like to be victim of an abortion? Would we have parliamentarians then?"

BC PHARMACY OFFICIALS THREATENING PRO-LIFE PHARMACISTS
Pharmacists denied choice to not dispense morning-after pill
VANCOUVER, Nov 23 (LSN.ca) - Cristina Alarcon, of Pharmacists for Life in British Columbia and her pro-life colleagues are refusing to obey an order by the BC College of Pharmacists that would force them to dispense abortifacient morning-after-pills or refer patients to a pharmacist who will dispense them. The College is reacting by threatening punishment - possible expulsion.
The Vancouver Province reports today that Alarcon estimates 100 B.C. pharmacists will not go along with a B.C. government plan to have the morning-after pill available without a prescription in pharmacies on Dec. 1. "The main reason we will refuse is that the public has a right to know the truth - the morning-after pill is not contraception; it is abortion."
Brenda Osmond, deputy registrar of the College of Pharmacists of B.C., said the pharmacists' code of ethics does allow pharmacists to refuse to dispense a drug, but it requires that pharmacist to find someone else who will. "And if there is no one else, the patient's rights must be honoured and the pharmacist must provide the drug." Osmond asked that all those refusing to bend to the College dictates be reported to the College. "A pharmacist who does not follow the code could be found in breach of the pharmacy legislation," she said.
The BC Pharmacy association is claiming it has received no complaints over MAP. Pharmacists for Life suggest it is urgent that authorities be contacted with concerns.

BUBBLE ZONE LAW RULED UNCONSTITUTIONAL IN MASSACHUSETTS
BOSTON, Nov 23 (LSN.ca) - On Monday U.S. District Judge Edward F. Harrington ruled that a recent Massachusetts state law creating a "buffer zone" around abortuaries is unconstitutional since it infringes free speech. The law which went into effect Nov. 10 forbade pro-lifers to come within six feet of patients without their consent when they are within 18 feet of an abortion centre's entrance.
Pro-life lawyer Thomas M. Harvey argued that "Within the zone, workers at the clinic were free to persuade or cajole women in if they were having second thoughts. But people on the other side were not." He said, "Under the law, a pro-life person couldn't even ask them to listen or read a pamphlet, and that was not right." In his ruling Judge Harrington wrote: "Pro-life advocates who firmly believe that abortion remains a grave moral evil must be given as equal an opportunity as their opponents to express ... their sincere message of respect for the sanctity of innocent human life. . . The First Amendment requires no less."
The state attorney general said he will appeal the decision.

CATHOLIC MEDICAL SCHOOL IN ROME SETS UP ETHICAL STEM CELL BANK
ROME, Nov 23 (LSN.ca) - Taking the initiative to solve the ethical quagmire over the use of stem cells from aborted babies and embryos, a Catholic medical school in Rome is setting up a stem-cell bank. Catholic News Service reported yesterday that Sacred Heart University's School of Medicine will inaugurate Italy's first personalized stem-cell bank this January, allowing parents to store their children's stem-cells from their umbilical cords for future use against disease. Salvatore Mancuso, director of the Catholic university's obstetrics and gynecological clinic, said "umbilical cord cells can have the same value and the same use as embryonic cells" and eliminate the search for compatibility.

WORLD HAS NOT BECOME ANY WARMER SINCE 1940
THE HAGUE, NOV 23 (LSN.ca) - Holding a press conference at the COP-6, the sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Treaty, the Science and Environmental Policy Project has shown that the world's climate has not warmed in sixty years. Headed up by Professor Fred Singer, a meteorologist at the University of Virginia, the group's analysis of reliable climate data flies in the face of claims by the UN- Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The findings are in accord with temperature data from boreholes and from proxy data (tree rings, corals, ice cores, ocean sediment analyses); it also accords with observed glacier melting, sea ice thinning, and sea-level rise)
The presentation noted that it is generally accepted that enactment of greenhouse gas emission cuts, as envisioned by the Kyoto Protocol, would be completely ineffective.
Professor Singer says that the claimed IPCC scientific consensus does not exist. "The IPCC is not a group of scientists at all but a UN-sponsored office, with UN staff. While competent scientists work on the report itself, the anonymously drafted Summary for Policymakers is a political document, controlled by a handful of government scientists who quote from the report selectively" In the presentation, attention was drawn to the statements of independent scientists around the world in opposition to exaggerated climate scares and the Kyoto Protocol: Heidelberg Appeal (1992, over 4000 scientists); Leipzig Declaration (1996, over 100 climate scientists); Oregon Petition (1998, over 17,000 scientists).
Global warming has been one of the reasons given by de-population advocates to justify their calls for a massive, urgent decrease in the world's population in order to "save the planet" from environmental catastrophe.
