REFORM MP INTRODUCES MOTION TO REDEFINE A "HUMAN BEING"

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

- Garry Breitkreuz demands protection for unborn children -

OTTAWA, Dec 15 (LSN.ca) - Reform MP Garry Breitkreuz introduced his long-awaited motion calling on the federal government to redefine a "human being" to include unborn children. "I still find it hard to believe that in Canadian law, babies don't actually become human beings until they emerge alive from their mother's womb," said Breitkreuz, as he introduced M-360 in the House of Commons today.

Back in July, when the Supreme Court denied a severely disabled child the right to sue his Mother for injuries, Breitkreuz called this "the last straw", and promised to "take up this challenge to improve protection of [unborn children's] fundamental right to life and security of the person in Canadian law."

Mr. Breitkreuz, a Saskatchewan MP and Evangelical Christian, has been one of the most outspoken Members of Parliament in defense of life and the traditional family since he came to the House of Commons in 1993.

M-360 reads: "That, in the opinion of this House, the government should bring in legislation defining a "human being" as a human foetus or embryo, from the moment of conception, whether in the womb of the mother or not and whether conceived naturally or otherwise and making any and all consequential amendments required."

ACTION ITEM All pro-life Canadians should write to their Member of Parliament expressing their support for M-360. They should also write to Breitkreuz or send a copy of the letter to their MP to Breitkreuz for his files so that if the bill is drawn for debate, in the House, he will be able to point to the degree of support that exists from across the country.

CANADIAN ABORTUARIES - MAJOR SOURCE FOR BODY PARTS MARKET

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

VANCOUVER, Dec 15 (LSN.ca) - Yesterday Ted Gerk, of the Pro-Life Resource Centre reported that the president of a major baby parts marketer in the US was caught on tape saying that he expected Canada to be the leading source of fetal body parts, especially for "late" abortions, thus "larger" babies).

Dr. Miles Jones, president of Opening Lines, a U.S.-based firm providing fetal body parts to medical researchers, has been recorded on tape stating about Canada: "We're actually going in there and saying to the clinic, we're going to cover some of your processing costs, and your overhead. We become a very attractive alternative to them. So ... I'm believing that they're going to be our best source for the late ones and we know where the larger ones are there."

Gerk said that "Jones' admission that he has been negotiating for body parts from late term abortions means that Canadian abortion clinics and hospitals are attempting to sell body parts for medical experimentation." He called for an official investigation "by all provincial health ministers and the federal minister of health, examining late-term abortion in Canada - and the possible use and shipping of baby body parts to fetal clearinghouses in the United States and other nations."

REALWOMEN: ABOLISH THE FEDERAL STATUS OF WOMEN

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

OTTAWA, Dec 15 (LSN.ca) - On Monday REAL Women of Canada called for an end to the Canadian government's Federal Status of Women, noting that the "antiquated agency, with an annual appropriation of about 18 million dollars, has become a tool to ridicule and silence women who do not support its propagation of the radical feminist/lesbian ideology, and the infiltration and forcing of this biased viewpoint on the national agenda."

Referring to a meeting of the group in Alymer Quebec last week, one attendee from REAL Women reported that the radical feminists ridiculed, jeered, and shouted at an attending panel of Cabinet Ministers. A press release from REAL Women also noted the discrimination heaped upon the REAL Women attendee (see Monday's LifeSite News) and former president, Cecilia Forsyth.

"The Status of Women is a tax-funded public agency which has become the tool of unrepresentative women to marginalize the majority of women. Consequently, the Status of Women, which condones and supports the intolerance, discrimination and abuse by these radical women, must be abolished, since its existence has become a travesty," concluded REAL Women.

UPDATE ON PROPOSED FORCED ABORTION IN ITALY

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

SICILY, Dec 15 (LSN.ca) - The proposed forced abortion of a mentally disabled 13-year-old in Italy has brought not only the condemnation of the Church as reported by LifeSite Monday but also numerous offers to save the baby.

The Noto diocese in which the girl, Laura, lives has offered to take economic responsibility to help Laura and her baby in any way for as long as necessary. Zenit News reports that the "Oasis of Mary Most Holy" of Troina, a center for the care of handicapped and mentally ill persons has offered to help, and the diocesan office for Health Pastoral Care of Catania offers 'thousands of arms ready to open to her and the little one.'" Furthermore operators of the residential home where Laura currently resides have expressed their pleasure in having Laura and her child remain with them.

The child is in the care of a her doctor, Ignazio Rufino, a second legal guardian who advises that she should abort the child even against her will. The Church has questioned the government's transfer of guardianship from the first appointed (pro-life) guardian to the current guardian. Antonio Guidi, former Minister of Family Affairs, has requested an investigative commission to look into this matter.

CLARIFICATION ON POPE'S CALL FOR END TO DEATH PENALTY

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

VATICAN CITY, Dec 15 (LSN.ca) - Media reports covering statements made by Pope John Paul II Sunday with regard to the death penalty failed for the most part to mention an essential proviso to his call for abolition of the death penalty. The official Vatican Information Service noted that, while the pope did renew his "appeal to all leaders to reach an international consensus to abolish the death penalty", he based this position on the view that "the cases of absolute necessity for executing malefactors are by now so rare, if not practically non-existent."

The Catechism of the Catholic Church notes that "the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude, presupposing full ascertainment of the identity and responsibility of the offender, recourse to the death penalty, when this is the only practicable way to defend the lives of human beings effectively against the aggressor." (CCC #2267) It adds that "if, instead, bloodless means are sufficient to defend against the aggressor and to protect the safety of persons, public authority should limit itself to such means, because they better correspond to the concrete conditions of the common good and are more in conformity to the dignity of the human person."

* In yesterday's news on the Supreme Court's legalization of lap dancing LifeSite noted incorrectly that Louise Arbour is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. While Arbour did present the ruling, the Chief Justice is Justice MacLachlin. Arbour was recently appointed to the Supreme Court, after serving as Head Prosecutor for the UN War Crimes Court.

* Also in last Wednesday's news LifeSite erroneously reported that donations to support lawyer Charles Ligousi in his bid to overturn the bubble zone law could receive tax receipts from the Christian Heritage Party. Such a policy is under consideration, but has not been approved.
