TORONTO, Oct 15 (LSN) - The Toronto Sun reported today on an interview with Dalton McGuinty in which the provincial Liberal leader vowed to promote "equal-rights" legislation for homosexuals. The paper reported that Hamilton East MPP Dominic Agostino even said that "there will be no free vote" permitted on the issue. "The Liberal party is committed to bringing in full legislation that will afford all rights, benefits and protections under the law to gay and lesbian couples," he said. "The only part that will stop short is on the issue of same-sex marriages."

COURT DECISION REVERSED TO ALLOW FOR ABORTION

CLEVELAND, Ohio, Oct 15 (LSN) - Yuriko Kawaguchi, a 20+-week pregnant woman convicted of fraud, was granted bail Tuesday so that she could get an abortion, reported Catholic World News (CWN) yesterday. The woman's lawyers appealed an initial decision not to grant the woman bail made by Judge Patricia Cleary last week.

Kawaguchi will be out on bail until her appeals hearing. The appeal is based on her lawyer's claim that Judge Cleary denied the request of probation rather than a jail term so that Kawaguchi would be prevented from having an abortion. The Judge maintains her decision was based on the seriousness of the crime, but added "I'm not going to be a hypocrite. I think it worked out swell if that was her desire to abort her child that late."

CWN reports that Kawaguchi now says she may not abort her baby. Cleveland Right to Life has offered Kawaguchi medical care, food, shelter, and assistance in putting the baby up for adoption.

HUGH FINN DIES OF STARVATION

MANASSAS, Virginia, Oct 15 (LSN) - Hugh Finn eventually starved to death last week after his feeding tube was removed at the request of his wife Michelle Finn, and by order of the court. Experts say starvation is a cruel and painful way to die (or be killed). American Life League (ALL) has been protesting this incident since it was first made public several weeks ago. Judie Brown, president of ALL, said: "This murder sentence was carried out, not by lethal injection or gas, but by a slow starvation process which took eight agonizing days to complete."

Despite the sworn testimony of doctors, nurses, social workers, clergymen and family and friends to the contrary, the courts chose to accept Michelle Finn's claim that her husband was in a persistent "vegetative state." Both US Delegate Robert Marshall and Governor Jim Gilmore intervened in the case to attempt to save Hugh's life.

GAY ISSUE HEATS UP WORLD WIDE

Oct 15 (LSN) - Within the past week the news has been replete with stories related to "gay rights."

WASHINGTON - On Wednesday the US Supreme Court let stand a ruling permitting Cincinnati to retain its law denying special rights for lesbians and gays. Catholic World News reported that the voter-approved law bans ordinances that give homosexuals protection from discrimination based on their sexual orientation in housing, employment, or other matters.

PARIS - Last Friday French legislators rejected a proposal to grant people of either sex who are living together and in sexual relations almost all the legal and financial advantages due to normal married couples. The defeat of the government proposal came about through a snap vote requested by the opposition when many government members were absent.

JOHANNESBURG - Nelson Mandela's government in South Africa completed another leg of its drive to advance pro-homosexual legislation last Friday when the highest court in the land struck down laws banning sodomy and ruled that men charged or convicted of sodomy since 1994 could demand monetary damages and clear criminal records. A 1994 provisional constitution given final approval in 1996 made South Africa the first country to place "sexual orientation" alongside race and religion as a restricted grounds for discrimination.

EDINBURGH - The Sunday Times reported this week that the Scottish Episcopalian Church is considering allowing homosexual marriage. The leader of the church, Richard Holloway Bishop of Edinburgh has supported the blessing of same-sex unions. In a speech to the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement this year he said "We have recently abandoned the (Bible) text's tyranny over women as we abandoned its justification of slavery and soon will abandon its ignorant misunderstanding of homosexuality."

MELBOURNE - The Age reported on Friday that Australia's Anglican Church was also called to reconsider its stance on homosexual marriage last Thursday by the church's leader Archbishop Keith Rayner. The challenge came in a sermon given to mark the opening of the Melbourne Diocese's policy-making session.
